The Four Horsemen were members of the backfield for the Notre Dame football team from 1922 to 1924, coached by Knute Rockne. The players were (pictured left to right) left halfback Jim Crowley, fullback Elmer Layden, right halfback Don Miller and quarterback Harry Stuhldreher. The way this lineup could run through their opponents’ defenses was highly recognized and The Four Horsemen name was given in 1924 by a sportswriter and student publicity. During the three year college football career of The Four Horsemen, the team only lost two games, one in 1922 and 1923. All four players took coaching careers after graduation and they were all eventually elected to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.
